Clear warning for vandals breaking into earthquake damaged houses

Vandals who break into earthquake damaged properties owned by Housing NZ have been given a clear warning from police and the courts.

Vandals have broken into several Housing NZ houses that are empty as a result of earthquake damage and stolen hot water cylinders, copper spouting and lead flashing.

Recently a sentence for burglaries and associated arsons that occurred in Riley Cr, Woolston included 196 hours community work, three months community detention with a curfew from 7pm to 7am, one year intensive supervision and reparation of $1500.

Housing New Zealand says it is taking a hard line and is working with police to monitor vacant properties.
