The middle-aged man police are seeking in relation to a firebombing of a house in Hornby is believed to be in the North Island.

Police said yesterday they had information that Tony O'Riley, 46, had left the Ashburton area on Friday for the North Island.

O'Riley who may be using the name Frank Barnett, is wanted for questioning after two molotov cocktails were thrown through a window of an Amyes Rd house at 12.10am last Tuesday.

Several people, including a 12-year-old girl who was sleeping, were in the house at the time.

Detective Damon Wells said while it was believed O'Riley did not pose a specific threat to the public he should not be approached.

The photo is of O'Riley in 2003. He does not have a beard now, but had a moustache last week.

Any sightings of O'Riley should be reported urgently to police on 111.
