James Munro had never sat in a racing car until last May and is the least experienced driver in the NZ Formula Ford championship.

However, the 15-year-old Christ's College boy shocked his elders and betters when he won on debut from pole position in his Mygale in the first race of the series at Teretonga Park last weekend.

Although he had to settle for second in race two and fourth in race three in Invercargill, Munro did enough to ensure he will get close attention in the second round at Levels this weekend.

His results were not surprising to fans who have followed his results in the South Island Formula Ford championship where he won every race he completed and set several lap records.

Munro cut his motorsport teeth in karting before moving up, and is the son of former Toyota racing series driver Mark Munro.

He said the Formula Ford national series was a step up from anything he'd done before.

"It will be hard and I expect to make some mistakes in my rookie season, but if it all comes together I should have a good chance," he said.
