A man who was hit by a car on Breezes Rd, Aranui, early on Sunday morning, has died.

He was Gavin James Cotton, aged 42, of Christchurch.

Mr Cotton had been in intensive care at Christchurch Hospital with serious injuries since the incident, which happened at  12.30am on Sunday. He died at 1.30am today.

Police have spoken with the driver of the car which hit the man, and to a number of witnesses.

Constable Pamela Cox says witnesses reported seeing the man wandering on to the road, possibly in an intoxicated state, prior to the crash.

Inquiries are continuing, but police say at this stage it is unlikely that any charges will be laid in connection with the incident.

"This is a timely reminder for people who are out celebrating at this time of year, to look out for their mates when they have been drinking," Constable Cox says.
