Police call for care around road works

Police are asking motorists to be extra careful when driving through road works sites.

The call comes after a 22-year-old woman was yesterday charged with dangerous driving and breaching her learner licence.

Senior Sergeant Phil Newton says the woman overtook another vehicle on State Highway 1 near Cheviot at about 1.45pm yesterday, while travelling through a 50km/h road work site.

Her speed was checked at 129km/h and still accelerating. Construction workers were present at the site at the time.

"Police have received a number of recent complaints from road works crews who fear for their safety," Senior Sergeant Newton says.

"Some motorists completely ignore temporary speed reductions or in some cases traffic lights that are set up through the work sites.

"Drivers that ignore the warning signs while driving through road construction sites put everyone in danger.

"Police will continue to enforce the road rules for road work sites this summer. Nobody was injured on this occasion but that was more of a matter of pure luck."

A court date has not yet been set for the motorist charged.
