An 81-year-old is being hailed as a hero after intervening in a Samurai sword attack in Woolston.

A 61-year-old woman will undergo surgery for arm and hand injuries when she was allegedly attacked by a 40-year-old man in St John St at about 5.30am today.

Detective Senior Sergeant David Harvey said the 81-year-old neighbour was extremely brave.

"The actions of the neighbour prevented this incident from escalating," he said.

Detective Senior Sergeant Harvey said a man who was visiting the address was arrested at the scene on charges of assault, threatening to kill and resisting arrest.

No-one else is being sought in connection to the incident.

Police were today speaking to neighbours.

The man is to appear in the district court on Monday.
