Success for The Star at the 2012 Canon Media Awards

The 2012 Canon Media awards were presented during a lavish red-carpet function held at the Pullman Hotel in Auckland recently. Christchurch Star photographer Geoff Sloan received high praise at this year's Canon Media awards as he claimed both the Best Single News Picture Award and the Best Photo Essay Award. His dramatic collection of images, entitled Heroes Admist the Rubble, documented the minutes immediately following the Christchurch earthquake as they unfolded. His image of CTV building survivor Anne Malcolm taken minutes after she was rescued shows the extent of the destruction and won him the Best Single News Picture Award. The Christchurch Star won the Community Newspaper of the Year award, and was a finalist in the Supreme award 'Canon Newspaper of the Year'.
